The Data Center Technician interview guide
The structure of a technician hiring loop, the scenario questions that decide it, and how to answer them without sounding rehearsed.
Updated 19 May 2026
Technician interviews are unusual: they are less about what you know and more about the order in which you would do things. Most loops follow the same shape, and knowing that shape removes half the anxiety.
The typical loop
- 1Recruiter screen: availability, shift pattern, lifting requirements, right to work, location.
- 2Technical phone screen: hardware vocabulary, basic networking, a short troubleshooting scenario.
- 3Onsite or panel: two to four rounds mixing scenarios, behavioural questions and sometimes a hands-on component.
- 4Safety and judgement round: often the deciding one, sometimes run by an operations manager rather than an engineer.
Scenario questions and what they test
A scenario question is never really about the fault. It is about whether you can reason under uncertainty without touching something you should not touch.
- "A customer reports their server is unreachable. What do you do?" — tests whether you gather information before acting, and whether you check the physical layer first.
- "You are asked to swap a PSU on a live system. Walk me through it." — tests redundancy awareness, ESD discipline and change control.
- "You notice a cable that is not in your ticket is unseated. What do you do?" — tests scope discipline. You do not touch it; you report it.
- "You are halfway through a maintenance window and something fails. What now?" — tests escalation and rollback thinking, not heroics.
Behavioural questions
Expect questions about a time you made a mistake, a time you disagreed with a procedure, and a time you had to deliver bad news to a customer. Answer with a specific incident, not a policy. The mistake question is a trap only if you claim you have never made one — what they want is evidence that you reported it immediately.
What to ask them
- What does the shift rotation actually look like over a full cycle?
- How is escalation handled overnight when the site is thinly staffed?
- What does progression from technician look like here, and on what timeline?
- How much of the role is customer-facing smart hands versus internal fleet work?
Preparing properly
Rehearsing answers makes you sound rehearsed. Practising decisions makes you sound experienced. Run scenario missions until the five-beat structure is automatic, then let the wording come out fresh in the room.
