Rack and stack explained

Rack units, rails, elevations, weight distribution, airflow and labelling — the full sequence of a clean hardware installation.

"Rack and stack" is the physical installation of equipment into a rack: unboxing, mounting, cabling, powering and documenting. It sounds mechanical. Done badly, it produces airflow problems, weight hazards and cabling that nobody can trace two years later.

The vocabulary

  • U (rack unit): 1.75 inches / 44.45 mm of vertical space. A standard cabinet is 42U to 48U.
  • Elevation: the map of what sits at which U position in a given rack.
  • Rails: the mounting hardware. Tool-less rails clip in; static rails need screws and cage nuts.
  • Blanking panels: fillers for empty U positions that stop hot air recirculating to the front.
  • PDU: the power distribution unit, usually a vertical strip at the rear, fed as an A side and a B side.

The sequence

  1. 1Verify the ticket against the hardware: serial numbers, model, quantity, destination cage and rack.
  2. 2Plan the elevation before lifting anything. Heaviest at the bottom, and leave the U positions the ticket specifies.
  3. 3Fit cage nuts and rails, checking front-to-rear depth against the equipment.
  4. 4Mount the equipment, using two people for anything heavy or deep. Do not extend more than one unit on rails at a time.
  5. 5Cable the network side first, then power. Route to the correct side and keep bend radius honest on fibre.
  6. 6Connect A and B power to separate PDUs. Two cords into one PDU is not redundancy.
  7. 7Label both ends of every cable, fit blanking panels, and photograph the front and rear.
  8. 8Update the asset record and close the ticket with the serials and final U positions.

Weight and airflow

A fully loaded cabinet can exceed a tonne. Load bottom-up so the centre of gravity stays low, and never pull heavy equipment out on rails from an unanchored rack. Airflow follows the same discipline: front-to-back through the equipment, cold aisle in, hot aisle out. Every unblanked U and every gap in containment lets hot air loop back around to an intake, which raises inlet temperatures for everything above it.

Documentation is part of the job

An installation is not finished when the machine powers on. It is finished when the asset record, labels and photographs match physical reality — because the next technician on that rack will trust the record before they trust their eyes.
